Argentina is the host of WAN's 6th World Young Reader Conference, which will be held in Buenos Aires from 18 to 21 September 2005. This year’s theme, “Winning a New Generation for Newspapers,” puts the spotlight more than ever on the fact that it’s never too early to create a newspaper reader.

WAN took its Newspapers in Education Development Programme to Latin America in late September 2004 for a three-day conference that attracted 65 participants from eight countries to exchange NIE ideas and practices. The "Newspapers in Education in Latin America: Sharing Ideas" conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was hosted by the National Association of Newspapers of Brazil in partnership with WAN and the Inter American Press Association and was supported by the WAN NIE Development Programme funded by the Norwegian paper manufacturer Norske Skog.

. Canada
The Canadian Newspaper Association has created a special Web site in English and French dedicated to NIE as the key element of its new national programme. The site features materials for teachers of grades 7 to 9 (ages 12 to 14) and classroom lessons that make use of newspapers with an emphasis on media literacy – understanding the newspaper’s role and formats.

Colombia has had an NIE programme since 1993 – originally with government support but, since 1998, the newspaper association Andiarios has sole responsibility for the programme. About 100 schools take part and receive daily subscriptions, bulletins for teachers, work guides and a handbook of ideas on how to use newspapers in the classroom. In some classes, the newspaper is the only text available.

. Costa Rica
Costa Rican newspaper La Nacion began its NIE programme in 1989, by training teachers in how to use newspapers as teaching materials and by conducting field work with students. A primary focus of the programme is a weekly Reading Fair at different schools.

The NAA Foundation will cancel its own conference in 2007 so US NIE and Youth Editorial Alliance members can attend the WAN Young Reader Conference in Washington. The conference will be held at the Capitol Hilton, 16th and K Streets, Washington, DC 20036. More
