WAN has added a special Press Freedom category to this year's World Young Reader Prizes.

We will recognize actions that effectively teach the young about the fragility and importance of press freedom in a democratic society. Top prize is 1000 Euros. Deadline is 15 June.

You can find details about this and the other five categories in this year's competition HERE

Help young readers join the fight

Local newspapers can help readers use Facebook to support  the Chinese journalist Shi Tao, WAN's 2007 Golden Pen laureate sentenced, with the help of Yahoo!, to 10 years in prison. Your young readers can download one of several posters from the WAN site, then upload to the Facebook group  "Show Your Face to Free Shi Tao" -- shitao.jpgand to you -- a picture of themselves showing where they are with the poster pasted on shitao.jpg the front page of your paper. Be sure to alert your youth editors and area teachers who work with you so entire classes can take a stand.

Details and and the poster can be found

Help teach freedom

heard.jpg Press Freedom Day (3 May) offers an excellent opportunity for  newspapers to teach press freedom directly and to  organize specific, simple initiatives for schools on this topic.

The first step is to provide teachers and families with ctivities that they can easily do.

We offer four sets of exercises (all in A-4 format) that can be run as stand-alone quarter-page advertisements in the run-up to Press Freedom Day. A larger page containing four sets of activities is also available.
