The Digital Path to 50 Percent Profitability

Birger Magnus, the Deputy CEO of Schibsted, the Norway-based newspaper company that is approaching 50 percent profitability from its digital operations, will be the keynote speaker at the World Digital Publishing Conference & Expo, to be held in Amsterdam on 17 and 18 October next.

 

Mr Magnus, who is responsible for the development of Schibsted’s strategy, expertise, organization and the group’s corporate communication, will show how Schibsted’s massive online growth has made the company a leading European player, with its online operations producing nearly half of the company’s operating profit.

He will be joined in a session on digital profit initiatives by Leon Levitt, the President of Cox Interactive, who is responsible for leading digital media efforts and developing a long-term sustainable business model for Atlanta-based Cox Newspapers, As one of the United States’s largest newspaper publishing enterprises, Cox Newspapers produces 17 daily and 26 non-dailies.

The 2nd World Digital Publishing Conference, organised by the World Association of Newspapers, will present an overview of the best digital strategies for newspapers, presented by some of the most forward thinking media executives from around the world. The conference will run consecutively with the WAN World Editor & Marketeer Conference and Expo, to give newspaper executives the opportunity to explore best practices on a wide range of newspaper operations at one convenient venue. Other confirmed speakers in the Digital Conference include:

-  Martha Stone, Director of the WAN Shaping the Future of the Newspaper project, who will present an overview of world digital media trends. She will be joined in a session on Web 2.0 by Rolf Svendsen, Managing Director of Adresseavisen online, Norway, and .Hidde Kross, Vice President of SKOEPS International, a citizen journalism news site in the Netherlands.

-  Steve Seraita, Vice President of Scarborough Research, who will present measurement initiatives that will aid newspapers in selling advertising in combined print and online packages. He will participate in a session on digital advertising revenue generation beyond classified advertising, which will also feature Willem Ednhoven of IRex Technologies and David Kenny, Chairman and CEO of the marketing technology company Digitas, who will talk about the digital advertising opportunities for newspaper companies.

-  Fredrik Oscarson, Managing Director of Mobiento, a Sweden-based mobile marketing company. Mr Oscarson will address sponsorship deals and advertising in a session on the mobile opportunity.

-  Mark Bide, Director of the Automated Content Access Protocol project, an initiative of WAN, the International Publishers Association and the European Publishers Council to develop an automated system to allow newspaper publishers to develop stronger control on access of content, particularly through search engines.

-  Richard Watson, an international trend-watcher and Chief Futurist at the Future Exploration Network, who will participate on a panel discussion on the future of newspapers.
