Some comparative statistical data from the 2000 census.

·The total population of Turkey is 67 803 927, the population in the provinces (cities and districts) is 44 006 274 and the rural population is 23 797 653.

·The population has grown fivefold in 73 years from an initial figure of approximately 13 million 600 thousand according to the census of 1927.

·While annual population growth was at an average of 314 thousand people per year in the 1927-1935 period, growth was at an average of 1 million 133 thousand people per year in 1990-2000.

·While the annual population growth rate was at its lowest with 10.6 per thousand in 1940-1945, its reached its zenith with 28.5 per thousand in during 1955-1960.

·The population did not grow significantly in 1960-1985 but went through a rapid decline after 1985.

·The annual population growth rate of 24.9 per thousand in the 1980-1985 period went up to 21.7 in 1985-1990 and has dropped to 18.3 in 1990-2000.

·In the post-1945 period, the population growth fell below 20 per thousand for the first time in 1990-2000.
