Tiles are an integral part of the art of ornamentation in Turkey and are used both for internal decoration and in facades. Turks were converted to Islam under the reign of the Karahanlı principality (955) and due to the ban on painting in their religion they focused on art forms such as calligraphy and tiles, which were at first mainly used in the decoration of their places of worship. Tiles were used consistently in Seljuk and Ottoman architecture and continue to adorn traditional style Turkish houses in our day. The craft culminated in the İznik tiles in the 16th century.
Tile ornamentation is appealing, functional and durable. It is used in covering wide areas in an attractive color and flower design and is highly resistant after being baked in furnaces with a temperature of about 900°C.
