Theater performances used to be a part of the program of the International Istanbul Festival since 1973. By 1989 theater performances gained an independent identity and the new event was named ’The International Istanbul Theatre Festival’. Every year, The International Istanbul Theatre Festival includes in its program the finest examples of classical and experimental theater, dance/ physical theatre, music theatre, theatrical concerts. From its start until today, the finest examples of national/ international groups, artists and productions participated in the Festival. Since 1997 the International Theatre Festival presents two "Honorary Awards" to one international and one Turkish theater personality for their lifetime achievement in the field of performing arts. The awards are presented each year during the opening ceremony of the Festival.

Each year the International Istanbul Theater Festival attracts an audience of more than 20.000 people.
