Just Published: New Strategic Reports From Shaping the Future of the Newspaper

Six new strategy reports on some of the most important recent developments in the newspaper industry globally have just been published by the Shaping the Future of the Newspaper project of the World Association of Newspapers.

The reports, which focus on how publishers can benefit from the opportunities provided by these developments, are:

-  The Mobile Opportunity. Perhaps the most important conclusion of this report is that every publisher can make money from mobile, quickly and with little investment. Mobile has other benefits as well: it provides a new avenue for gathering information to build knowledge of reader needs and interests; it provides a bridge to the next generation of readers; it is interactive; it can add value to services offered to advertisers; and it can reduce administrative and workflow costs.

-  New Classified Models. In every market, there is some evidence of classified advertising increasing in digital media, often at the expense of traditional media. But while classified is on the move, the pace of migration from print and web is much slower than many forecasts. By following a few simple rules, newspapers can retain their grip on classified markets, together with the resulting profits and customer relations.

-  Circulation Winners. The most successful newspapers in 18 markets as well as independent observers share their views on the reasons why some newspapers are increasing their circulations while others decline. The study shows that the drivers of circulation success are remarkably similar in many diverse markets.

-  Emerging Markets. Newspapers in different countries and cultures face a range of challenges and opportunities, in widely varying economic and political climates. But each shares a passion for success. This study draws on cases from four countries that exemplify the new generation of media owners that is emerging, and examine the different issues and challenges that they face.

-  New Designs, New Formats. This study of good newspaper design examines the front page revolution and other format and design changes that are occurring all over the world. The authors have asked 14 designers to choose a favourite page and explain what makes it a success. They have also asked four leading designers -- Mario Garcia, Terry Watson, Lucie Lacava and Juan Antonio Giner -- to give their views on how newspapers will change over the next decade.

-  Creative Man: Media Landscapes. The first in a series of reports to address what newspaper publishers can expect to encounter in the business landscape in the coming decade. Business forecasts relating to newspaper revenue streams, projections of future media consumption patterns, illustrations of how audience behaviour is likely to change are all part of a mix of information to help publishers adopt strategies to develop their businesses in the years ahead.
