Wall Street Journal Publisher at World Newspaper Congress

Karen House, Senior Vice President of Dow Jones & Co. Inc. and Global

Publisher of The Wall Street Journal, will share her views on the current

definition of “news” and how this has changed in the face of global economic

change, in a presentation to the World Newspaper Congress in Istanbul,

Turkey, later this year.

There are now 63,000 multinational companies, compared with only 7,000 in

1970, an evolution that has altered news definitions and created new reader

needs, says Ms House.

At the Congress, which is expected to draw more than 1,000 publishers,

managing directors and other senior newspaper executives from around the

world, Ms House will also give her views on how subscriptions and

advertising should be priced to reflect the value offered by newspapers.

“In an era when media choices are proliferating, there is a tendency by the

newspaper industry to fall into a sort of ‘commodity pricing mind-set,’ she

says. “As we are coming out of a recession, we are busy reassessing our

pricing on both the advertising and circulation fronts, looking to make sure

we remain the market leader and that we price according to the unique and

premium value we offer our customers.”

Ms House will also say how she believes newspaper publishers should view

other media -- as potential threats or as potential sources of new

customers?

The 57th World Newspaper Congress, 11th World Editors Forum and Info

Services Expo 2004, will bring leaders of the world’s newspapers to Istanbul

from 30 May to 2 June for the annual global meetings of the world’s press.

Ms House is one of dozens of top-level executives who will be speaking at

the events. For more information, including the evolving programme details,

This year’s Congress, “Winning Strategies for the New Business Environment”,

will focus on whether the current financial, managerial and technical

challenges requires the creation of new newspaper business models to ensure

success and prosperity in the future. Special attention will be given to new

advertising concepts that newspapers need to embrace to win the maximum

amount of business, and to “best practice” employed by the most innovative

newspaper companies.

In addition to Ms House, confirmed speakers include: Lord

Rothermere,Chairman of the Daily Mail and General Trust in the United

Kingdom,; Donald Graham, Chairman and CEO of The Washington Post Co., USA,;

the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who will open the

conference; Brendan Hopkins, CEO of APN News & Media in Australia and New

Zealand; Pradeep Guha, President of Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd., publishers

Germany; Fred Arp, Director of Telegraaf Holding, the Netherlands; Tony

Whiting, CEO, The Border Morning Mail, Australia; and Vuslat Dogan, CEO of

Hurriyet, and Hanzade Dogan, CEO of Milliyet, Turkey.

Two new features will be included this year: a special workshop on the

challenges facing newspapers in emerging markets, and a “master class” on

the WAN Shaping the Future of the Newspaper project and the solutions it can

provide for publishers.

The two-hour master class, featuring leading newspaper executives who have

joined the new WAN task forces on advertising, readership and digital media,

will provide an opportunity, in a lively interactive session, to examine

some of the key strategic issues facing the newspaper business and the

solutions offered by SFN.

Other sessions will focus on emerging newspaper trends and innovations, on

new advertising concepts, on circulation winners and a session on the best

business practices in newspapers.

Sponsors of the Congress and the Forum now include the Union of Chambers of

Commerce of Turkey, the Anadolu Efes Beverage Group and the Dünya daily

newspaper.
