Great Debate
WAN President Roger Parkinson's criticism of
China's record on press freedom during the opening ceremony of the
World Newspaper Congress and World Editors Forum was a historic
occasion - a rare chance to address Beijing directly while on Chinese
soil, in the presence of Hong Kong's leader. Chief Executive Tung
Chee-hwa rose to China's defence, but was unable to refute Mr Parkinson's
remarks.
