First Day - Tuesday 18 September

9h30 = HELSINGIN SANOMAT - how a strong traditional newspaper company has been changed into modern multimedia company

Helsingin Sanomat, part of the international Sanoma Corporation, is the leading daily newspaper in Finland with a circulation of 426 000 copies and 738 000 weekly online visitors.  HS has an interesting dual role as the national and regional content provider using the print and the 24 hour online and mobile news service. It is also running local Radio Helsinki. The corporation will start a new online company called Sanoma Digital in 2007.

Kauppalehti, part of the Alma Media Group, is the largest national business newspaper in Finland and magazine publisher. It also provides comprehensive online and mobile services - and is making money on it.

Oulu

Oulu is ranked as one of the 30 most important technology centres in the world with, among others, a major research unit of Nokia and production unit of Nokia Siemens Networks. Situated 600 kilometres to north from Helsinki with 130 000 inhabitants. It is also a major media city.

At the City Hall of Oulu

The City of Oulu has started a unique high quality, totally free wireless service to its inhabitants and visitors within the city area. Oulu is also doing real life innovative pilot testing and R&D in collaboration with research institutes and ICT-companies to find the best practices to utilize newest mobile technology and solutions. The content providers in Oulu are working in close cooperation with each other and the City in the Media Forum network in order to enhance and internationalise the local media.


11h30 = Visit to Stora Enso Paper Mill

Stora Enso is one of the biggest global forest industry giants in the world. Its Oulu Mill is one of the world's largest and most modern facility manufacturing art quality coated woodfree papers and boards. The design, integration and location of the Oulu facility is unique: almost all raw materials including energy are carried from one plant to another by pipeline.


13h = Lunch at Stora Enso


14h45 - 16h30  KALEVA´S solutions in Oulu - How an Finnish independent private publishing company is coping with strong media chains.

1) Kaleva is the world´s largest newspaper this far in the north and the fourth largest daily in Finland covering the northern half of the country. Its internet site is the second most popular among the Finnish daily newspapers. Kaleva also produces a targeted online service, High Tech Forum, with a major company.

You are encouraged to sign up soon as space is limited and participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Study Tour fee:
- Standard price: 4,500 euros.

- WAN and WEF members: 3,800 euros. 
Price includes transfers within Finland, hotel accommodations and all meals. Flights between your country and Finland are not included.
